COVID placed tremendous strains on the entire social services network. Restrictive measures coupled with an unprecedented demand to maintain required safeguards during long periods and extended work days, availability of care service employees, throughout the system, became scarce. Hiring has remained a challenge and costs have risen across the board. Though, Le King David has been able to retain its resilient staff other residences have not been as fortunate. Most have chosen to cut servicing and rebrand as “retirement communities”. Any services they make available are provided at a high cost because these are outsourced to 3rd party private agencies.

Families, post COVID, are realizing less available options, particularly in respect to seniors who prefer to maintain an independent lifestyle. Getting home services is not always the ideal option. Though it seems simple enough just to bring in domestic help, as needed, this requires a lot of coordination and follow-up on behalf of family members. Live-in help could become very costly but, regardless the cost, it is not an ideal solution. Seniors living alone, become isolated, lack social interaction with peers and inevitably the responsibility that remains with family members becomes overwhelmingly challenging.
